Now that we’re heading towards something resembling a seasonal change, it’s time to break out the goods and welcome you to join us for an exciting Champagne tasting with Eric Maillot of Champagne Alexandre Bonnet! 

Beginning production in the early 1970s, Alexandre Bonnet is located in Les Riceys, at the southernmost tip of the Champagne region, in the Côte des Bar. In fact, Côte des Bar is closer to Chablis in Burgundy (40 miles or so) than the rest of Champagne, which is around 80 miles north. The soils here are more reminiscent  of Burgundy as well, with Kimmeridgian limestone as the dominant soil type, as opposed to the more chalky soils further north. This is Pinot Noir country, which makes up nearly 85% of plantings here, followed by Chardonnay. 

Along with the unique makeup of soils, Alexandre Bonnet has committed to ensuring proper environmental stewardship, coupling organic practices with an HVE 3 certification. HVE is a French government backed certification that measures farms on biodiversity, low impact practices, and resource management, and level 3 is the highest achievement available. This focuses on biodiversity, a reliance on alternative, non chemical methods of plant protection, fertilization management through the use of organic matter, cover crops and compost, as well as optimizing water usage through reduced waste in irrigation, coupled with managing runoff to keep water sources clean. 

On to the fun! We’re showcasing eight, that’s right EIGHT wines from Alexandre Bonnet, covering the multitude of styles they produce. From their non vintage Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs, to several vintage bottles of white and rose (we’re covering 2018 to 2021 vintages!) and finally, something really fun you don’t see everyday - a dry, still Pinot Noir from their estate! This is one of the more intriguing tastings I’ve had the pleasure of putting together in some time, don’t sleep on this one!
