Gray Randolph’s path in wine began in the 1980s while drumming for the rock band Locals Only, evolving from an avid collector into a Certified Sommelier, French Wine Scholar, and winemaker. He earned his Certified Sommelier title in 2009 through the Court of Master Sommeliers, achieving a perfect score on the blind tasting, showcasing his refined palate and technical prowess. In 2015, he added the French Wine Scholar certification, reflecting his mastery of France’s terroirs and winemaking traditions. Beyond credentials, these achievements represent decades of study and a fantastic ability to recognize wine quality and expression throughout the wine world.
Gray served over a decade on the Board of Directors for GuildSomm International, including four years as Chairman, helping guide one of the world’s foremost sommelier organizations. He also contributed as Vice President of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation, which has raised over $21 million for charity.
Now, on to the real meat of it all! In 2015, he launched Gray Randolph Wines, producing small lot Napa Valley and Piedmont bottlings that combine Old World sensibility with New World fruit. His Napa Cabernets, from Oak Knoll, Stagecoach, and Rutherford Trailside vineyards, showcase distinctive terroir, alongside a finely balanced Pinot Noir and a Napa Chardonnay, all reflecting his sommelier’s precision and reverence for place.
